Mary grass (Setaria barbata) is a herbaceous species in the Poaceae, perennial grass, ribbon leaves, leathery with linear folds, green, hairy, grows wild in the shade, widely cultivated as an ornamental plant, some cultivars have striped leaves and purple midrib.
S. barbata has stems that grow from an elaborate rhizome, 1 cm thick and hairy. Leaves sparse to completely hairy, linear blades, oval or lance-shaped. Sharp tip, a vein in the middle, pleated texture and coarse or hairless hair.
The grains in panicles, yellowish green, open and spreading. The spikelets are several millimeters long and are often accompanied by hairs.
The grass is vigorous and spreads through rhizomes and seeds, forming monotypic stands. Cultivated as an ornamental plant for its palm-like pleated leaves. Some cultivars have striped leaves and have purple midribs.
