The leaves are ovate to oblong with a pointed tip, heart-shaped base, sometimes violet or dark blue or black or green, shiny to dull, waxy and the base is rounded.
Flowers come in cobs at the axils of the leaves and have a stalk. The sheath is green or yellow or white and falls off. It grows on forest floors, agricultural lands and deserted places. Often cultivated as an ornamental plant.
