Bangkong sungai or river toad (Phrynoidis asper) is a species of animal in the Bufonidae, a large frog, not fat and rather slender, often with rough nodules and large lumps, males have a length of 70-100 mm and females have a length of 95-120 mm.
P. asper has a dull dark brown or grayish or blackish back. Black speckled underside. Males usually have black chin skin. Swimming membranes down to the toes. The male calls the female from the river bank when the moon is full. Sound: wok.. sis, it's heavy and it repeats rather slowly.
They are often found near rivers, on rocks up to the cliffs above. Sometimes also in low shrub branches. Active at night and hides behind rocks during the day. Sometimes swimming in groups in hidden water.
This species can jump long distances with long legs. Often plays dead when caught. When held and placed on their backs on a flat and level place, they will remain motionless for a few moments and then suddenly turn around and jump instantly.
