Damele (Glochidion obscurum)

Damele (Glochidion obscurum) is a species of plant in the Phyllanthaceae, a tree with a height of 5 meters, an upright, cylindrical, woody, branched trunk, linear cracked bark, grooved wood surface, greenish brown color and horizontal roots.

G. obscurum has compound, alternate, oval leaves, 5.5 cm long, 3 cm wide, rounded tip and base, flat edges, pinnate veins, smooth surface, upper side dark green and shiny, lower side pale green and has a 2-3 mm stem.

Flowers appear in the leaf axils, have long stalks, are solindrical and yellowish white in color. The flowers are fan-shaped, yellowish white, the stamens are yellow and the pistils are white.

The fruit is ball-shaped, green in color, has white dew-like hair on the surface and has 6 seeds in circular chambers. The seeds are crescent-shaped and red.

This species grows in hilly and mountainous soil at an elevation of 0-1000 meters above sea level, clay or sandy or limestone soil, hot and drought-resistant areas, teak forests, mahogany forests and others.

NEWS - Perlis fairy lantern ( Thismia perlisensis Besi & Rusea sp. nov.) was discovered during a scientific expedition in a wetland forest at the foot of a limestone hill, Perlis State Park, resembling Thismia arachnites Ridley (1905) and Thismia javanica J.J.Sm. (1910), but has a prominent reddish dome-shaped annulus. Thismia perlisensis can be easily distinguished from T. arachnites and T. javanica by its blood-red dome-shaped annulus (vs. ring-like with a rim, orange annulus), prominent trilobed stigma with bifid and subulate lobes 1.8 mm long (vs. oblong, truncated stigma), and claviform apex of inner tepal appendage (vs. subulate apex of inner tepal appendage).
